Baptism
At Highbury Congregational Church we understand baptism as an outward sign of God’s covenant of grace and as an ‘ordinance’ or ‘command’ of Jesus Christ (not as a ‘sacrament’.) It is the mark of God’s love for all of his children; baptism at whatever stage of life is about what God has done for us.
Baptism is normally by sprinkling or pouring water on or over the head of the baptised. Baptism by immersion may be arranged if appropriate.
Please contact the minister through the Church Office, 01242 552 050.
Communion
Communion is also known as the Lord’s Supper. When we celebrate communion, we give thanks to God for his love shown to us in sending his Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross. We gather in faith to remember what Jesus did for us and to be renewed in the hope of the resurrection.
At Highbury we practice an open table where all are welcome to eat the bread and drink the cup, young and old, with much faith or little. We believe that God’s grace is available to everyone who shares at the table.
We use gluten free bread and non-alcoholic ‘wine’. The cup is shared in individual glasses. The bread and cup (sometimes called elements) are served to the congregation; we hold the bread and cup and once all have received, we eat together as a sign of our unity.
Normally, the minister leads the communion service. However, anyone who is appointed by the Church Meeting may lead.
Weddings
Highbury Church is registered for opposite and same-sex marriage. Marriage is an important commitment, and couples will be prepared for this life-long journey with preparation meetings.
